History and Culture

The Beginning
Founded in 1966 as Communication Specialists, Comspec has always been dedicated to the mission of adding value to its products and services while exceeding the needs and expectations of its clients. fBeginning in the late 1960s, the company's mission was fulfilled through the customization of radio communications equipment. During this time, if the solutions required did not already exist, Comspec simply invented and built them.

From a small shop at 944 Wilson Avenue in the heart of Toronto, Communication Specialists addressed the electronics needs of the 1970s. In 1976, as microcomputers, terminals, and peripherals were added to the company's product line,Communications Specialists became a corporation -- Comspec Communications, Inc.

The Microcomputing Era
Comspec's venture into an emerging technology field makes it one of the original computer providers in Toronto. The company's original attitude of providing whatever it took to satisfy the customer continued as further 'firsts' in computer technology were developed.

True Innovators
The company found it advantageous to manufacture anything that was hard to purchase or failed to work as advertised. Comspec's Microshare is an example of one such innovation.

Long before the development of today's networks, the Toronto Institute of Medical Technology required a system to allow files to be easily shared between computer systems. In response, Comspec developed the Microshare, which allowed the institute to connect several systems to a series of external drives, thereby creating a more efficient and secure system. Microshare also supplied an obvious cost benefit by allowing expensive peripherals to be shared. This cost benefit attracted a number of schools and school boards, making Comspec one of the first companies to provide advanced networks to libraries and educational markets in Toronto.

Since the mid-1980s, Comspec has been assembling its own in-house custom computer systems. This experience in system design and assembly allowed Comspec to meet its corporate clients' critical needs when out-of-the-box solutions would not suffice.

The Internet Age
The mid-1980s marked Comspec's entry into the Internet. Before long, Comspec's servers were transferring up to 1% of the world's total email traffic, which at the time, was the Internet's primary form of communication.

  • Comspec Communications, Inc. has been using the domain "comspec.com" since the mid-1980s.
  • On February 28, 1992 comspec.com was registered as one of the first Internet domain names through the Internic.

In 1994, construction on the comspec.com website was initiated. The site's development enabled the company to demonstrate the operation of Internet web servers. This was followed by the web-enabling of Comspec's internal inventory systems, which further revealed the Internet's powerful ability to serve information to a worldwide audience. This also marked the beginning of Comspec's web content management solution, MediaClay.

Now as Then
Today, Comspec specializes in providing a broad range of cross-industry business services and software solutions.

As in the past, Comspec continues to stay abreast of current developments with the objective of meeting the needs of its clients through process and innovation.
